OUR MISSION

At The Womb Garden, we honor the transitions of womanhood by caring for mothers now and guiding young girls to become the kind of women who will demand better care for generations to come.

In communities that invest in mothers, we see lower health risks, stronger bonds, and healthier children. We are reimagining not only postpartum care, but generational care—drawing on the best global models and traditional practices. We plant them here on Maui, where healing is part of the land.

Together, we’re not just caring for women—we’re restoring a sacred cultural memory, preparing the soil for the next generation to thrive.

I hope you will join us in cultivating a sanctuary where women’s transitions are honored with the reverence they deserve.

Intergenerational Healing - Moon Maidens

We’re not only caring for mothers—we’re also preparing the next generation to walk into womanhood with strength and reverence.

For the past 4 years, we’ve hosted monthly gatherings as well as an annual rite of passage ceremony for pre-adolescent and adolescent girls as they transition into womanhood. These gatherings have helped our community’s young wāhine connect deeply with their bodies, cycles and feminine power.

They’ve learned that menstruation is not shameful, but sacred and that their bodies are not burdens — they are sources of intuition, strength and creativity. By tending to these girls now, we are nurturing future women who will embody the wisdom of those who came before them.

Postpartum care was never meant to be done alone.

Cultures across the globe show us what’s possible when postpartum care is prioritized:

  • Taiwan and China have an entire postpartum care industry—with “confinement centers” offering 24/7 support of what the Chinese culture call “zuo yuezi”, a period of healing with specialized care, herbs and food.  Mothers who receive this support have lower rates of postpartum depression and higher breastfeeding success.
  • In South East Asian countries like Malaysia, Indonesia,Singapore, mothers often receive 30–40 days of traditional care after birth passed down for generations known as “pantang”: massage, herbal baths, warming foods- to protect physical and emotional recovery.
  • In Japan, postpartum mothers spend up to 30 days in “satogaeri bunben” care—either with family or in specialized centers. The result? Stronger maternal mental health and higher breastfeeding rates.
  • Indian ancient Ayurvedic practices provide superior healing during the postpartum period- including warming oil massages for mothers and infants which is believed to promote healthy muscle tone, hair and skin.

Every culture had their own ways of honoring the mother after the miracle of birth, utilizing local herbs and plants in their healing remedies and foods.

Across cultures, postpartum traditions exist because they’re medically wise and spiritually essential. They emphasize rest, warmth, nourishment and emotional connection. These rituals are not outdated—they are evidence-based, trauma-preventing and deeply human.
